Legion honors WCSCC students

Two Wayne County Schools Career Center students received certificates and a gift card from American Legion Post 68 for having the highest career center scores on the American Legion Americanism test.

The two juniors receiving awards were Hunter Kerestes of Orrville from diesel technologies and Raquel Dewald of Wooster from interactive media.

Kerestes is the son of Ben Kerestes of Mansfield and Leslie Schuring of Orrville, and Dewald is the daughter of James and Sarah Dewald of Wooster.

Dewald received the highest score of any student in Wayne County on the test.

“This is the 20th year that the career center has participated in the testing program,” government teacher Kimberly Huffman said. “The test is taken across the nation in early November.”

The honors were presented by Otis Mekoleske and Cmdr. Shirl Evans in front of instructors, administrators and parents.

The exam is given at schools throughout the United States, and a boy and girl in each grade level from sophomores to seniors with the highest scores advance to district and regional competitions, which identify state qualifiers. State winners receive a free trip to Washington, D.C.
